It covers the same basics a matchmaker or relative would ask about in person: age, height, education, profession, family background, and, depending on the community, horoscope details like Rashi or Nakshatra.
Dating apps and matrimony sites have changed how people meet, but the biodata itself hasn't gone away. Relatives still forward it over WhatsApp, parents still print copies to hand to family friends, and matchmaking sites still ask for it as a PDF attachment. It's less a formality than a shorthand: one document that says who you are before anyone has to ask.

What to Put in Your Biodata
The form asks for exactly what most biodatas include. Here's what each part covers and how much detail is actually expected.
Personal Details
Name, date of birth, height, complexion, education and current profession make up the core of the page. Keep education and job titles specific: "B.Tech, Software Engineer at a mid-size firm" reads better than "Engineer," since vague entries tend to raise more questions than they answer. Two or three hobbies or interests are common but optional, and they get read more often than you'd expect.
Family Details
Father's and mother's occupation, number of siblings and whether they're married, and a line about family background or values. Many families read this section as closely as the personal one, since it says a fair amount about home life.
Contact Details
Phone number and city are standard; email is optional. If you'd rather not put your own number on a document that gets forwarded around, list a parent's or sibling's number instead. Plenty of biodatas do exactly that.
Photo
A recent, clear photo makes people actually stop and read the rest of the page. Face visible, decent lighting, no group photos or heavy filters: much like a passport photo, just less strict about it.
What Do Rashi, Nakshatra, Gotra and Manglik Mean?
These fields are optional in the form. Whether you fill them in depends on your family's own tradition, and plenty of biodatas leave every one of them blank.
Rashi (राशि)
Your Moon sign in Vedic astrology, calculated from the Moon's position at the exact time of your birth (not the Sun, which Western zodiac signs use). There are 12 signs.
Example: Vrishabha (Taurus), Simha (Leo)
Nakshatra (नक्षत्र)
One of 27 lunar constellations, or "birth stars", used alongside Rashi for horoscope matching (Guna Milan) before many Hindu weddings.
Example: Rohini, Ashwini, Uttara Phalguni
Gotra (गोत्र)
Your patrilineal lineage, traced back to a Vedic sage. In many communities, marriage within the same Gotra is traditionally avoided, so it's asked about early.
Example: Kashyap, Bharadwaj, Vashistha
Manglik (मांगलिक)
A person is considered Manglik (or affected by Mangal Dosha) when Mars falls in specific houses of their birth chart. Some families check this compatibility before finalising a match.
Options are usually: Yes, No, Anshik (partial), or Don't know
Gan (गण)
A classification into Dev (divine), Manushya (human) or Rakshasa (demon) temperament, used together with Nakshatra as part of traditional horoscope matching.
Example: Dev Gan, Manushya Gan
Biodata Conventions Differ by Community
There's no single "correct" biodata format. What's expected varies by religion, region and family. Here's a general sense of what each community's biodatas commonly include; treat it as a starting point, not a rule.
Hindu
Usually includes Rashi, Nakshatra and Gotra for horoscope matching, plus Manglik status. Many families still ask for these before the two sides meet, though it's increasingly common to leave them blank and share a horoscope separately.
Muslim
Astrology fields are generally left out. Biodatas more often mention sect (for example Sunni or Shia), family background, and sometimes a guardian's contact details alongside the candidate's own.
Sikh
Similar to Hindu biodatas in structure but without the horoscope-matching emphasis. Family values, gotra (for lineage, not matching), and community involvement are more commonly highlighted.
Christian
Typically the simplest format: personal, educational and family details, occasionally noting denomination (Catholic, Protestant, and so on). No astrology fields.
Buddhist
Format and content vary more by region and ethnicity than religion. Astrology fields are uncommon; family and educational background carry the most weight.
Jain
Close to the Hindu format, sometimes with Gotra included for lineage. Dietary practice (strict vegetarianism) is often stated explicitly since it matters to many Jain families.
How to Share Your Biodata
Once it's downloaded, a biodata is just a file. What happens next depends on where it's going.
WhatsApp is where most biodatas get sent today, whether that's to a relative, a matchmaker, or straight to a prospective family. A PDF keeps the formatting intact on every phone; an image works too, though a photo already baked into the file makes it a bit heavier to forward.
For matrimony sites, upload the PDF as your profile attachment. Most sites accept it directly, so there's no need to convert it into anything else first.
